2024 National Championships

Kamloops Kant be Beat

Living up to their name, Team Kant be Beat from Kamloops British Columbia went undefeated at the 2024 Ethics Bowl Canada National Championship, lifting the trophy in front of a packed crowd in Buhler Hall located center floor of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Professor of Philosophy at Simon Fraser University and Chair of Ethics Bowl Canada, Nicolas Fillion, had this to say about the impressive victors:

“It’s wonderful to see the high level of accomplishment of participants in the National final. But in this impressive field, the South Kamloops Secondary School team turned out to be the most thoroughly well-prepared team. For the entire event, they succeeded in convincing judges that their outlook on the complex ethical cases they faced was the most informed, comprehensive, and coherent and that, as such, they had made the best contribution to our collective efforts to figure things out. Their performance has been inspiring!”

Dr Jenna Woodrow, organizer of the Kamloops Regional Ethics Bowl, was delighted to learn that a team from her region won (again!) the prestigious Ethics Bowl Canada event. Professor Woodrow had this to say about the team:

“All the teams at our regional were impressive. SKSS went beyond the surface to explore the implications of their arguments in new contexts, and the evidence they used was rich, detailed, and well chosen. They showed a nuanced grasp of philosophical principles, including Secwepemc belonging, and brought this to bear on real-world problems with an openness to revision and heartfelt commitment to working with, not against, other teams. Congratulations!”

Amplifying the weight of their accomplishment is the fact that this team is composed of four Grade 10 students and one Grade 11. Attention Canada, we may be witnessing the beginning of an Ethics Bowl dynasty.
